When you hear the word independent woman, what comes to mind? You might think something like a woman who knows what she wants, a woman who can buy her things without any help. Maybe you think it’s a woman who has her life together.
But how exactly does a woman become independent? This article is meant for any woman, no matter if you are 13 years old or even 50. You can always become independent in any part of your life.
At some point in our lives, we feel like we are independent at all because of different things. Trust me, I was in a four-year relationship, which I felt was more dependent vs. independent.
So during this quarantine, figure out what you want in your life. So here are a few pieces of advice for those who feel like they are independent in some areas in their life and want to be.
Start depending on yourself
Depending on yourself is the first step to take when it comes to becoming independent. The old you get, people will stop looking after you. I know it’s hard for some, even me, because I have depended on people pretty much all my life. There is nothing more liberating than you doing things for yourself and not owing anyone anything.
Start paying for your things
You will have to start buying your things and paying for your items. Stop depending on your parents, boyfriend, or even your roommate on getting you everything you want. If you wish to do something goes for it; get it yourself.
Start taking care of your health
When you feel good, you look good; when you look good, you have more confidence in yourself. That starts by you taking good care of yourself from your skincare routine to how you talk to yourself. Eat healthy, workout, create a method that best works for you.
Get to know yourself
This is the best time in your life to know yourself. You might be living alone, have no one to talk to since we are social distancing ourselves. But take this time to understand what you want in life, who you are as a person, what are your dreams, your goals, and most of all, what makes you happy.
Try new things in your life that you never thought possible of trying before. Leap of faith and challenge everything about yourself. Challenge your beliefs, your assumptions. If you have never dared to start a business, go for it.
Don’t tell anyone or ask someone for permission; do it like Nike. If you feel like working out because you gained so much weight, or because you want to gain some muscle weight, do it.
Start making your own decision
I have mentioned this, but I am going to repeat it. Stop asking for permission, stop asking for other opinions. You have to start thinking about yourself. You have to think about what you want and go for it. You have to start deciding what you want, also deciding what would be easier for you in certain situations.
Change your vocabulary
Do you ever wake up in the morning and a few affirmations, or thank you for another day? When you wake up and look at your phone, or check your email or even start working on your business, all those things are not right. You have to start saying beautiful things to yourself before you open your eyes and get out of bed. Instead of you speaking:
- I am fat
- I am ugly
- I am not good enough
- I am a loser
- I am not smart enough
- Everyone is better than me.
What you are doing is bring negativity to your brain, so you have to start changing those things. So you can start by saying.
- I am grateful
- I am smart enough
- I am enough
- I am worthy
- I am beautiful
- I am amazing

Get to know your finances.
I know finances can be hard for many people, but you have to start learning and understanding. Take a seat, grab an excel, a piece of paper, or wherever you need and start writing down everything you owe and how much you have in your bank account, including your savings.
Looking over your finances is an excellent way to get a good idea about where you stand with money. You also start planning out how to pay off any debt you have or even save for a vacation that you want to take next year.
Start believing in yourself
I know things will be hard at 1st when you start doing things on your own. But trust me being independent will get you places, and you will grow in your life. These are just a few steps that all of us have to do at some point in our lives. That is part of growing up and being an independent woman.
